How is an oil painting on canvas made?
Creating an oil painting on canvas involved several steps:
- Canvas Preparation: The canvas is first stretched over a wooden frame and primed with gesso to create a smooth, stable surface for painting.
- Underpainting: David applied an underpainting using a monochromatic color to establish values and forms. This can help create depth in the final painting.
- Layering Paint: Oil paints were applied in layers, starting with thinner paints and gradually building up to thicker applications.
- Drying Time: Each layer of paint required time to dry, as oil paint dries slowly. This allows artists to work with multiple layers without disturbing the underlying paint.
- Finishing Touches: Once the desired look is achieved, the painting may be finished with a varnish to protect the surface and enhance the colors. Varnishing also provides a uniform sheen to the painting.
- Framing: Finally, the completed paintings were framed for display or left unframed for a more contemporary look.

What if my item arrives damaged?
If your item arrives damaged, please contact us within 48 hours of delivery with photos of the damage. We will work with you to resolve the issue.
